Soft vs hard credit searches explained

Which searches lenders can see, which affect your score, and how to shop around safely.

Soft searches

A soft search lets a lender or comparison service look at your file to estimate whether you would be accepted. It is visible only to you and does not affect your ability to borrow.

Hard searches

A hard search happens when you formally apply. It is recorded on your file and visible to other lenders for around 12 months. One or two are normal; several in a short space of time can suggest you are under financial pressure.

How to shop around safely

  • Use soft-search eligibility tools first
  • Only apply formally for the offer you intend to accept
  • Space applications out if you are declined
  • Check your report for errors before applying

Common questions

How long does a hard search stay on my file?

Usually 12 months for lenders to see, and up to 24 months on the record itself, depending on the agency.

Do quotation searches count as hard searches?

No. Properly labelled quotation searches are soft and do not affect lending decisions.
